  SWINDON GAY SCENE

THE GAY DIRECTORY

Does Swindon have a Gay Scene?Has Swindon got a great Gay Scene? For a long time the answer to this question was no, not in the terms you might associate with places like Blackpool, Manchester or Birmingham, but the town did have two excellent Gay Pubs and a fun Gay Club. It was getting there. Then more recently another Gay Club opened, and it looked like Swindon had everything going for it.

However since those days there has been a sudden downturn in Swindon's fortunes, and of what the gay scene once was, today it appears to be but a shadow of that - albeit still an enjoyable one. Now split between just two gay venues, one at either end of the town, we suspect there might be some major changes to come to the scene very soon. If you'll pardon the expression: it's not like gay people to leave a hole unplugged for long!

The Mail Coach:

The Mail Coach. To be found in the pedestrianised part of Fleet Street, the Mail Coach re-opened as a Gay Bar quite some time ago now, although you may still find some of the previous young, straight, gorgeous, patronage continue to use it. The place has really taken off and become very popular with the gay clientele. Opened originally by two great guys, Mark & Carl, it is obviously Gay orientated with the usual free Gay Press etc. openly available. Tragically, Mark was killed in a road accident in 2003, but the pub still goes on. There are Cabarets, and Theme Nights etc. as locally advertised, and excellent Meals are available at the expected times at reasonable prices. The back bar (by the garden) appears to be the more popular with the gay clientele with the garden seating a big plus point for this venue on a hot day. This venue underwent a MAJOR refurbishment in 2002 and the re-launch party was a great success with people queuing to get in. Many came from 'out of town'. The new picture of the pub is on this page. Camp, or what? Entry is now via the garden at the rear. Check their website for news of all their fantastic events - and don't miss the galleries! "Hello, Mum! No - that couldn't possibly be me!"
